Sonny Bunz Update, and More!

A few of you have emailed lately, and asked how Sonny Bunz was doing. I am extremely happy to report that he is GREAT! Due for a trim, as usual, but other than that he is fantastic. We are getting in rides as often as we can, which admittedly is not that often, and he is progressing well. Today we snuck in about 5 minutes (literally) of a ride, before the winds picked up and pine cones came crashing down around us. Since the thought of getting concussed by a pine cone is not overly appealing, we quit while we were ahead. We did have time to spend on how to stand properly for mounting. Works for me!

Dat Fricken Wooster

Yesterday was an interesting and busy day. We were at a barn that has a rather... grumpy .... rooster, who decided that Wrecking Crew was a target. I don't know if in his tiny little rooster brain he was thinking Wrecker was a threat to his sole hen, or if he just woke up on the wrong side of the nest, but Wrecker walked by and he attacked. I told the barn owner it was a good thing I had locked the gun up in the truck, because otherwise we would be having us some rooster stew. Dat Fricken Wooster (as Wrecker calls him,) got himself a talking to though, and stayed shy of us the rest of the day.

Dat Fricken Wooster wound

The highlight of the day? Donkeys. Wonderful, beautiful, intelligent, gentle, loving, sweet, soft, cuddly, furry, kind donkeys.

It was time for Baby Jan Donkey to have her very first trim of her teeny tiny toes, and she was actually quite good for it. When it got to her hind feet though, she decided a protest was in order, and laid down on top of my feet, closed her beautiful eyes, flipped her lovely long ears askance, and just laid there. Oh the indignity of it all! Her Momma came over, and poked her pretty nose between my knees to check on her baby. It was hilarious- Momma Donkey had loads of room to go to my left, but nooo- she needed to get in between my knees to see. Wish I had my camera then, because seeing her nose from my view was hilarious. Big Sis Donkey had to keep an eye on the entire trim process as well, and stood very near by during the entire procedure, rubbing her nose on the baby and watching Dear Husband like a hawk, making sure all was well.

Big Sister Donkey, watching the trim process closely...

*sigh* someday.. Someday there will be room for a donkey... or three!

Wrecker was cute. He spent a good bit of time loving on
Baby Jan Donkey, and declared that he wanted to ride her. Boy was he crushed when we explained that Baby Jan was only 3 months old and not near old enough to sit on...

Funder posted a bit ago about rasping her hand, and the below shot is for her. Funder, you are not alone! I manage to get my knuckles more often than I like. Don't worry- a bit of cleaning, triple antibiotic, and a good band aid, and in a few days it's all healed up good as new. (And if you do it often enough, scar tissue builds up and you won't even bleed as much!)

There is more moving along here, but this is all I have time for right this second. Storms are headed this way that have the potential to be pretty vicious, and we need to prepare out doors for them just in case they hit here. Nothing like high winds, heavy rains, and potential tornadoes to whip us into action securing things that might fly around!

Happy Hoofin' y'all... and I'll be back to answer questions on hoof growth rates soon!

Getting attacked by a rooster or hen is one of my deep fears. I once had to help house-sit for a movie director who had a hen in his back yard. Even though there were dozens of women having a sleepover at the house, that hen attached itself to me and chased me everywhere I went. It scared me, so I ran, and it just kept up with me. When it came time to catch the hen and put her in her house for dinner, I was tasked to do it, because the hen wouldn't let anyone else near her. Amazingly, she was quite sweet, but I think it was the way they bob there heads and poke their beaks out when they walk that made me think she was trying to peck me. I had a goose grab the crotch of my pants with its beak when I was a kid, and a goat butted me when I bent over at a petting zoo. Ahhh, the traumas of childhood and the unpredictability of animals.

Sounds like our storms are moving in your direction now. At least you won't get snow (right?). We don't want your peas to be damaged!

Poor Wrecker. Roosters can be nasty. You cracked me up with your 'Dat Fricken' 'cause at first I thought it was some kind of Dutch breed of rooster. lol!

I think most roosters go after kids before adults, probably due to size.
Mine have tried, too. But they've gotten a swift boot into oblivion and now they clear a wide berth when the kids come in to gather eggs.

Heck one time Jax had locked himself into the henhouse and he said the Roos didn't even come near him, even though he was scared they might try something. lol!

Anyway, Sonny Bunz looks great. Good to hear the positive update. I'm yearning for a donkey or two, too. sigh.
So sweet!

Stay safe, dry and comfie during the storm....and protect those peas! :D

Those donkeys are awfully pretty. Glad to hear they cooperated!

I think I would've had coq au vin if a rooster had jumped me or my family! I suppose you can't eat the client's livestock, though...

Your poor thumb :( My poor finger has scabbed over and isn't sore at all anymore. I have even forgiven Champ for jerking his feet around. Aren't I kind? ;)

What a handsome dude the Wrecking Crew is as he grows up (too fast!). That photo of him reaching through to the donkey is priceless. Roosters and hens who attack - I agree with Nuzzling Muzzles, that's just wrong and too psycho. Soup time!!

There's a great invention called gloves that protect your hands from those nasty rasp burns...LOL...yea, I know, you don't like them. I just gotta give you a hard time.

Owie, that rooster hurt! I flenched!!! Oh that baby donkey is the most adorable little one and the rasp mark looks like it hurt worse than the rooster peck except that skin is tougher! he he (sorry just had to pitch that one in) The snow storm hit her big time! We had 6 inches today..

Oh yeah..I remember being chased by a mean ole rooster with huge spurs when I was a kid. They can be real bullies.

Donkeys...big sigh here too. Our home owners association won't allow donkeys in the neighborhood. or we'd have a couple of them.

I was just reading about another rooster attack on another blog...scary! Your own little versions of "The birds." I loved your concussion/pine cone comment... we quite while we were a head (no pun intended, eh?)
Great pictures of the donkeys....I've never actually been around a donkey or burro in real life! Weird. I hope to get to know one someday!

OUch! On the wooster bite! Glad sonny is doing well and at least you got 5 minutes in. Rasping a hand, that's an ouch too! And I love donkeys!

Ahhh yes...chickens, ducks, geese...well I guess any bird in general, can be nasty at times, eh??? My friends used to have a nasty gander who couldn't wait to take a chunk out of whomever walked by his mates nest in the summer. Fwicken rooster.....

PS-Sunny Bunz is looking mighty sleek and devine! :)

Glad to hear that you are getting some time with Sonny!

Those donkeys are so cute! I want one!

Too bad about the rooster attack - I used to get chased my chickens, ducks and geese when I was little. Still not a big fan of birds to this day. Unless they are in a stew!

You so need a donk! They are great! There personalities! I love my long ears! Yes I love my ass! Lol~sorry couldn't resist!

Poor wrecking crew!! dang wooster!! lol My little guy probably would have been terrorizing them and caused it to attack.

I am seeing more and more donkeys on these posts and our rescue (where we got our older girl) has a donkey and I'm trying (very unsuccessfully I might add) to talk him into getting it for me :)) With my luck it would be the crankiest orneryiest one ever.

Oh my goodness, that mark on your boy's arm is bad, dat mean old wooster!! That is horrible!! That rooster would have been dinner, that's all i have to say!!

I am glad Sonny is doing well. How is Sonny bred? He is such a nice looking boy. I need to look back on your posts and find out how and when you got Sonny.

Glad to hear that things are good with Sonny although would like to hear you're getting MORE riding time in not LESS!

Boy can I relate to getting concussed by pine cones although it was more like a tree top that tried to fall on my truck. Sure did kill working horses for the day, and maybe tomorrow too. I'm really sick of this joke of Mother Nature's, winter is supposed to be over not just getting started.

Sonny looks great!
As to the rooster thing...unfortunately, that is his home and he felt he wanted to be in charge. I warn people that we have roosters running around free before they arrive just in case, but all my roosters are nice, they just leave everyone alone or squat to be petted. I am sorry Wrecking crew got hurt.
happy horsin' around!
