"What Happened To My Horsie?"

To quote Jackie Chan in "Shanghai Noon", yesterday I was once again sitting wondering "What Happened To My Horsie? .... Is he.... Dead?"

Turns out he didn't die, but he is making me think that he is either:
A) got it all figured out how to get to nap on the thick lawn grass for a few hours,
B) He has an issue in his hind gut that I need to discover and resolve, or
C) all of the above.

Dear Husband poking Sonny to make sure he was alive..

The last two times he has had a belly ache, we attributed it to a change in hay types. However, this time, he has had the same exact hay, from the same exact producer, from the same exact field. It has been tougher than usual to keep Sonny's weight where I like it as well. He isn't "skinny", but he isn't quite what I like to see on him either.

"Where Am I?"

We know the following:
His teeth are good
He is up to date on parasite control
No dietary changes
No fertilizer used on the lawn where he grazes

Ulcers? Sand? Time to investigate more!
THESE things... Holy Crap! When they bite, I swear they draw off a pint of blood in under 2 seconds flat.
They leave welts that are the size of my hand!!

To add to his humiliation, I took pictures. AND I worked on his feet. Must say- it was the best he has ever behaved for a trim since we've known him. Also must say this is the best his feet have looked since we have known him.

He does look out of it. If it's ulcers and you use one of the OTC supplements (U-Gard or something like it) you'll probably see improvement within days.

We have a horse at our barn with narcolepsy - she falls deeply asleep and then falls over. Doubt that's your guy.

Funny you say that Kate! We have a client who has the CUTEST little pony filly that is narcoleptic. She zonks out when we trim, and it takes a few of us to hold her up. She is getting better though, now that she has decided that she REALLY REALLY likes Dear Husband!

I love the pink spot on his nose!

So do you know what it is/was?

All this talk of narcolepsy reminds me of the movie Rat Race. I hope he's alright and was just feeling sleepy.

I hope you can figure out why Sonny isn't feeling well, although he looked mighty comfortable snoozing on the lawn!!

Awwwww...sorry to hear that Sonny colicked again. Do you know much about his past??

My old horse used to colic at least three times per year-usually in the winter-and the vet said it was most likely because he was malnourished the first year of his life.

He thought that it most likely damaged his intestinal tract. Also, have you thought about ulcers?? Poor Sonny, and poor YOU! :)

So do you know what is up with Sonny? I am confused. Although it is almost a constant state for me lately!!

Even if it's not ulcers and possibly suspect that, try the U-guard pellets, seriously. I've had the issues with Kola and belly aches. I put her on U-guard for three months, switched over from a grassy hay to a 50/50 alfalfa hay and now, took them both of grain and started the Equibalancer feed pellet, and knock on wood, this is the best year so far. Does he sleep at night? are there things he feels he needs towatch over and protect and actually not get his rest? WOw, what a cunundrum.

I would hope it's the first choice, but I'm thinking with your trail of thoughts, probably not. I hope you get it figured out. Poor boy :(

And wow, nasty fly!! Thankfully we haven't really encountered anything aside from regular flies yet this year.
