The past few days have been incredibly hard. Wait- the DAYS are OK, aside from the occasional uproar from the Little Mens. Nights however, are a whole different story. Last night, for instance, was a bad one. Since Sonny came home, I have been up.. well, a lot. Monday night, I slept all of two hours. Tuesday night, I was up and down about six times, checking him constantly. Wednesday night at 12:30 I was out with him, in my jammies, slip on shoes, hair standing on end (I had taken out my braid and my hair went nuts in the humid air.) Oh yeah- the shotgun too. A girl can not be completely dressed with out her weapon of choice, right? Besides, that lovely shotgun just looks fantastic with my purple pull over....
Sonny was unsettled. He kept snorting quietly and blowing a bit, looking off at the darkest spot by the road. The back of my neck was prickly, and I was uneasy too. I didn't come in until Sonny settled, around 1or so, and stayed up until about 2 to make sure all was well out there.
Today it's raining, and I decided to skip the hand walk. Two times might have been too much yesterday, and Sonny seems content to stuff his handsome face with lots of hay and rest as well. His legs are still sore, and I worry about his hind end, but little by little he seems to be gaining strength. Stall rest might wind up continuing for a while yet.
So my Thankful Thought that is getting me through today? Sonny is ALIVE. And HOME. I can look out my window and see him. I can walk out my door and touch him, and bury my face in his mane. Too many people out there never get that chance again.
A very good friend of mine summed it up perfectly yesterday. She said, "Sonny did not escape, and survive running down the highway and falling into a pool only to come home and die. He will be OK."
And on THAT note, I'll stop now. Enjoy the pictures of Big Red!

Just caught up with your blog today. Good grief, what's happening- first Mikey, and then you! So unbelievable that someone would cut a fence, they sure were up to no good, sneaking around in the dark. You got enemies, girl? Love the image of you in your purple jammies and shotgun.... let'em mess with you now! I hope Sonny continues to mend, that he heals 100 percent and continues to bring you joy for many years. As for the creeps that cut your fence, I hope the sheriff finds out who did it and that they are prosecuted and have to pay the medical expenses. Give your red horse a kiss on the nose from me and a heart felt hug to you.
I love your friend's positive thinking!!
Nice pics of the big guy. I bet if anything he's enjoying all this attention :)
Geez. I want to send our Bella (our guard dog) over there to eat those monsters in the bushes.
How horrible. Maybe it's time for a security light along that fence?
nuzzle to sonny from his worried herd in the hill country.
Sonny sure is a good lookin' boy. I like your friends quote. Very nicely said.
can you offer a reward for any information leading to perpetrator? then set up a collection here, let people donate from $1 on up. i dont care if it was kids or whatever, there are consequences. and there needs to be consequences. your vet bills need to be paid and i think they need some jail time. seriously. ask the police about setting up the reward. they did this to you and sonny, who is next? and maybe the next horse wont be so lucky.
Oh my goodness girl, where have I been!! So much has happened!! I am glad Sonny is doing better and I hope you are getting enough sleep. I know you have a lot of things going on right now, besides Sonny being hurt. So I hope you do get some rest, so you don't get sick. I love the picture of Sonny giving some love to your cub!!
I also love what your friend said!!
I would have been outside with a shotgun too, that just freaks me out. I sure hope that idiot doesn't even try to come back!!
I wish I could give you some of my sleep and energy. I know how it feels to have someone or animal sick and how those days and nights feel without sleep, lots of stress, and that huge pit in your stomach. Just know I am sending you
and S Bunz positive thoughts and energy and a lot of prayer to you all! Started a reward yet?
Yipes- this is so scary!
OMG!!! I am so glad there is a small good news outcome--Sonny came home, battered but home. I wonder how those folks that found him felt waking up to see a big red horse in their yard and then he falls in the frickin' pool!!!!! How did you connect up to bring him home? And, I sure would be buying a nice big loud-mouthed doggie to keep watch(love those Great Pyrenees).
