Oh This Is SO Not Fair.

Current temp outside: 105*

Temps at some of my favorite places:
76*
75*
61*

Something is really wrong with this picture.

Speaking of pictures-- here's one for you. Warning- don't look real close if you have a snake aversion.

This was NOT in my yard. This over 6' long rattle snake was outside of Fort Stewart (about an hour from here.) The rattlesnake population has exploded this year with a twist-- they are NOT rattling to warn you before they strike. The man in the picture (who knows Dear Husband) tried to provoke this snake into rattling, and he did not succeed. It is not just that snake that has not been rattling--- very few of the snakes he has seen this year (72 total) have rattled.

By the way-- the man? He is 6' 2" tall. One of them there southern corn fed mules.

I've been out of sorts the past few days. First the news of a beloved adopted family member in bad bad BAD health sent me reeling. The thought of loosing someone else so very close to my heart on the heels of loosing Johnny Reb has done a number on me.

Then yesterday, Dear Husband called with news.
Friday evening (still daylight out) one of our neighbors was abducted and raped as she walked closer to the road to get a better signal on her cell phone. (She lived. Amen.) This happened less than a 1/4 mile from where I sit right now.

Later on, Dear Husband called with more information. The two suspects who did that have also been implicated in the abduction and rape of two OTHER women, with in two miles of here, in the last two weeks. AND! They have ALSO been implicated in roughly ten home invasion/ burglaries in the immediate neighborhood.

AND!
As he was leaving for work yesterday morning at 7AM, there was a roughly six foot water moccasin in the driveway.

I did not realize he had seen the snake until 10A when we spoke. At 9A, I was out in the paddock taking care of the horses and the Locust Brothers had Murphy out playing. They all came running rapidly to me, "Mom! Mom! We saw a BIG SNAKE!!" (By the time I got to the spot with the shotgun, the snake had gone.)

It's a snake invasion- but some of the snakes are bipedal.

*sigh*

I think it's time to move. For reals.

Yuck all around, and very scary (the bad people part) - maybe it IS time to move!

omgosh, i cannot imagine, it's so hard to even try to imagine not feeling safe in one's city.

i'm a little naive, it's only "relatively" safer whatever that means.

it also makes me so much more nervous when going into a big city where crime has a rate.

our humidity has been so high this week i have not been able to do the simple things outside like cleaning up poop in the pasture. i like to drink my water, not breathe it.

Lytha, "I'd rather drink my water not breathe it" cracked. me. up. I so needed that today!!!

BAd people seem to be everywhere! But the snakes (crawling no legged ones ) can be avaoided . Stay safe friend , and consider Alberta, we always need good farriers and you would be that much closer to a certain bay filly

Snakes alive! Or dead- you decide...
I live in an area where we are surrounded by crime 24/7. One learns to bewary of everyone and everything. Sad to live like that but thats the way it is. Same way with those snakes-you know they are out there, you have to watch your every step. I (do) carry a small pistol with snake shot every other round- works for both kinds of varmints.

My first thought on reading this post was, "time to move" then I saw that you wrote that too. Yup. That's a little close to home. Like Sherri said, c'mon to Canada!

Holy moly that is a big snake! We, too, seem to be having a snake explosion, but thankfully they're just rat snakes, small and harmless (and useful!).

Too bad you can't use the rattlers to take out the human snakes... Yikes.

Well my Canadian friends, fix it so that packing our pistols is legal, and Dear Husband said we'd be happy to move to Canada! ;)

Yikes! Ellijay is sounding pretty good now, huh? Oh, and Talking Rock has had 0, I mean ZERO crime for the last several years. But with a population of 75, that's not hard to do!

That's scary! especially with the attacks on women so near to your home. Be careful!!!

Husband and I are also reaching the "time to move" conclusion. We live in a tiny town miles from nowhere and yet the other night had a neighbor come banging on the door asking for a fire extinguisher because another neighbor's porch was on fire. Lots of weird stuff later, it turned out the neighbor with the fire was locked up in his house with a few friends having a little drug party. So much for quiet country living. How much further from civilization do we have to get?

Yup, the temps have been plumb reasonable here the last several days.

I trust you are packing 24/7 these days?

Yikes - bad guys AND big snakes??? You stay safe down there, Mrs. Mom! I'm sure that anyone that messed with you would be sorry (snake or bad guy) but I still don't want you to have to go that far!

Bad guys aside, I honestly don't think I could handle being around big snakes like that. *shudder*

Too bad about the gun thing, we'd love to have you up here! :-)

Holy Crap! When it rains it pours. I'd be armed at all times if I were you.

Please 'walk tall' and carry a big hammer!!

Yes move! You're welcome up here - you'd fit in well in Eastern Washington!

I had NO idea a rattler could get that BIG. Aughhh. I like the idea about the rattler getting the rapist! Your welcome to upstate NY anytime. We'd be glad to have you guys as neighbor's.

Mrs Mom said...

Actually Jenny, I'll be in your rough area in the next month or so. Still have a good bit of family up there. One of the reasons I moved from NY?? Can't carry my pistol up there as I do down here. (Yep. 2A gets a lot of exercise down in these parts ;) )

Bad guys and crime are everywhere. When it happens to neighbors- especially something like abduction and rape- it sends a clear and scary message. Head on a swivel, one in the pipe and pack 24/7.

The newly discovered meth problem in our town is disturbing but certainly doesn't hold a candle to the horrible crimes that have found their way to your neighborhood. These used to be places where people never locked their doors. Be safe!

Serial rapists that close to home? Are the suspects in custody? I'd be eyeballing all of my neighbors suspiciously. But I already do that, as is. I was telling my good neighbor about how I looked up my annoying neighbor in the Sexual Offenders' Database, because his staring is so incessant. She said, "Oh, but they are very religious." I said, "So? Just because they are religious doesn't mean they are good." Then we went on a rampage listing all the religious fanatics we know who have committed crimes over the years. Anyway, it does sound like the south sucks right now.

I am just freaking out for you.

Get out of there! Come here where it's 67 degrees and WONDERFUL.

And where my attack saddlebred will save you from any rattlers or rapists.

UGH - just ugh. I am so sorry.

Praying for the health of your loved on.
